NNAMI is suitable for to concert halls, galleries, site-specific spaces, and/or distributed digital environments. The configurations below are starting points rather than fixed productions; instrumentation, projection, sound, and audience participation can be shaped around the architecture and resources of each venue.

Ways to Present NAMI

Spatial plan for the NAMI hybrid live and mobile performance

Hybrid Live / Mobile

Two seated musicians perform inside a non-stage environment while audience members move freely around them. Visitors access Jun Hoshino’s water videos by QR code and keep their phone screens visible and sound on, turning the audience into a distributed layer of moving image and sound.

Christine Southworth performs electric guitar with eBow while also controlling the playback laptop. Evan Ziporyn performs clarinet through effects. A Bose L1 supports the shared playback sound, while each performer uses pedals and a nearby amplifier.

Live Performance with Projection

A concert-stage version with synchronized water imagery projected behind the performers. Christine and Evan are seated with pedalboards in front and amplifiers behind. Each amplifier is microphone-amplified, and the laptop provides the audiovisual playback layer.

The two amplifier microphones and the computer feed a mixer. The mixer sends sound to left and right PA speakers at the front of the stage and to a monitor speaker for the performers.

Gallery Installation — No Live Performers

An immersive room-scale installation with three vertical 9:16 projections on each of four walls. The twelve video fields surround visitors, while four speakers in the corners point inward to create an enveloping spatial sound environment.

In the current concept, each projector plays back its assigned media locally. The gallery provides projectors, projection surfaces, playback capability, power, cabling, and four-channel sound. A centralized multi-output playback system may also be used where the venue has appropriate media-server infrastructure.

Distributed Approach

NAMI can also unfold across multiple rooms, venues, or geographic locations. Each site runs a synchronized set of vertical videos and its own local sound system. The locations share a common time base, allowing the combined work to remain coordinated without requiring a single centralized projection environment.

Each location can present three or more screens or devices, a local playback source, and speakers. When experienced across several spaces, the independently heard sound layers form evolving cross-patterns, extending the project’s central idea of wave interference.

Planning

Venue-Specific Adaptation

These diagrams illustrate the spatial logic of each configuration, but they are not fixed technical riders. Final layouts are developed in conversation with the presenter and adjusted for room dimensions, audience circulation, acoustics, projection throw, power, network access, and available equipment.

Additional performers, alternate screen arrangements, and hybrid combinations of the four formats are possible.
